I see a lot of people ask “What does Perry call Doofenshmirtz in his head?” (The answer, by the way, is “Heinz.” I mean duh. Get a job, thinky boys!) However, I think a question even more relevant to understanding the monotreme’s psyche is “What does Perry call himself?”
Perry the Platypus is in the unusual position of having three very distinct identities, two of which have intersectionality while the other must always stay distant and hidden.
He’s Perry, the exotic pet who lives in the suburbs and doesn’t do much. He loves this life and adores his family, but he can’t interact with them in conscious, meaningful ways. That doesn’t make him any less affectionate of his family and children, however.
He’s Agent P, the greatest Secret Agent the OWCA has. He is always on call and willing to take on any duty, no matter how challenging or ridiculous it may seem. Here he interacts mostly with Major Monogram and Carl. Agent P’s relationship with them is mostly “professional” (that term must be used loosely) and, though Agent P sometimes finds their banter irritating, he genuinely likes them.
Finally, he’s Perry the Platypus, nemesis of Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz. This part of his life is by far the hardest to define or qualify. He’s an adversary, a confidant, a help mate, a kill joy, a therapist, a best friend, and so much more. Some days the monotreme finds himself punching Heinz in the face to prevent him from undermining his brother Roger, some days he finds himself helping Heinz to raise his little girl, and some days he finds himself just hanging out. Ironically, this part of his life is the least burdened by rules and protocol.
So, back to the question: what does our favorite suave, semi-aquatic personification of unstoppable dynamic fury call himself? “I’m ____”? We’ve seen him sign his name “Perry the Platypus” on multiple occasions and, if you know me, you know I personally think that. But my opinions aren’t definitive.
What does Perry call himself? It is an interesting question.
